Gary and I have been working on our kitchen now two years a little bit at a time.
Gary loves the Oak cabinets in the kitchen and did not want to change them, also I must tell you the cabinets were custom made for the kitchen when we bought the house, but my heart has always belonged to white cabinets, I felt the Oak cabinets gave a very heavy look to the kitchen. Our compromise was to add seeded glass to a few of the cabinet doors. So it was a win win for both of us. I am happy!
It took me for ever to decide on hardware for the cabinets, finally I found some I really liked through overstock.com they have oodles of hardware to choose from and at a good price I think.
We still have crown molding that is being installed to complete the kitchen and also bought new appliances..I can't wait to show you! They were special order and will not arrive until sometime next month. Maybe the crown will be completed then too...I'm hopping.

Hi, Oh girl I'm in awe over your kitchen. I had always thought I'd get rid of Oak cabinets too, that is until I saw what you've done to yours. I love your backsplash, the glass doors, and of course the granite-I'd take yours in a heartbeat. Thanks for sharing; I can't wait to see your new appliances. I love the hardware too.

ReplyDeleteI am not much of a fan of compromise, though it seems to work beautifully here! I'm still chuckling that he didn't notice the cabinet panels removed over the top of the sink...a huge improvement by the way. Your kitchen looks so cozy. Thanks for the tip about Overstock...I'm looking for new hardware if someone would get busy with one of my projects instead of all of his own. Ha!

ReplyDeleteOh Elizabethe..you don't know what you have done for me this morning. I also have wood cabinets and want white. My husband is the same way. He balks at our doing it but after seeing your handles..I am thinking perhaps I can do that at least..
ReplyDeleteI have no doors to remove..and unfortunately these cabinets are solid with no inset to be add glass to. I did what you did in Bakersfield at our last home and I painted the cabinets all white. The kitchen was gorgeous...but it's gone now and I cannot look back. My little kitchen does not even have a window in it so it is very dark and lamps stay on all day long. In the meantime..I will opt for the new pulls perhaps.

I do know what you mean about loving white cabinets, though, I'm with you on that. If it makes you feel any better, Gary is normal. Almost ALL men prefer wood cabinets, and trim.

I have maple cabinets........they are so pretty, but I'd have preferred white as well.......or a color. But, when we bought this house we determined that it would be our last home and I didn't want to be 104 and have to re-paint and keep up on white wood. I guess everything is a trade off.

ReplyDeleteHaha, till we die we will be changing things! In The Netherlands I had a solid oak kitchen but the grain was not as 'wild' as the American oak. Since than, it only has been white for me. In the first home in the US, Pieter painted them in a jasmine white. In Italy we installed a white kitchen and here again we have a white one...
It makes it happy and bright. Sure, the glass doors make it more friendly so I guess you have to live with it.

What a differenc your glass makes and also taking off a couple of doors for dispay space is a a very inspired idea.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of or seen "seeded" glass, but I really love the look and gives a depth regular glass doesn't. I've always added glass doors to my kitchens. It's always game me a reason to keep my shelves organized. LOL
Your kitchen is becoming your dream and I love it.
Your kitchen is so lovely. The before and after is pretty amazing. I still want to add some glass panels to my cabinets, not sure if I will ever get around to it.

Hubby loves the custom made all wood kitchen we did too, after having white cabinets, which eneded up ugly with old age, lol..and, I too compromised on some milky glass cabinets, not all, but I have enough with lighting inside, they look great. Yours are fab, I kind of like your glass better than the milky ones I have, as you can see what's inside, but not totally. Love it, great job!
